South Asian Home Remedies I Can’t Live Without

Chances are that whatever background you come from, you have some home remedies and habits ironed into your brain. Something your parents, family, or friends always stressed growing up. They are often passed down from generation to generation and can differ based on your background. But how effective are they, and what are some that work well?

What are home remedies?

Home remedies are often alternatives to store-bought items. They can be made from a number of household items. Remedies can be used for anything from your skin to your health and many ingredients have medicinal and cosmetic uses such as turmeric

History of home remedies

South Asian remedies and medicine have been derived from ancient times and are often considered the oldest traditional system. Because of this, home remedies have been tested and tried countless times throughout history. This enforces their effectiveness, kind of like its own built-in social proof.

How effective are home remedies?

At-home solutions can be pretty effective based on the ingredients you use. But it is always important to note how your body reacts and to make sure that the ingredients you are using are safe.

I have many favorites coming from a South Asian background and have used them throughout various parts of my life.

Turmeric Face Mask

Ingredients: Turmeric, Yogurt, Honey, Besan Powder

Directions: Mix the ingredients until it becomes a paste. Leave on until dry. Wash off with water.

Description: This face mask is great for brightening your skin and helping with hyperpigmentation. Your skin will feel smooth and soft after.

Oud Face Oil:

Oud oil has had various uses throughout history and was a staple in my household. One of my favorite products is the Overnight Oil Elixir from Khalm Skincare®.

Ingredients: Oud essential oil, Vitamin C, Avocado Oil, Meadowfoam

Directions: Cleanse face with cleanser of choice. Add 1-2 drops of oil to fingertips and rub to activate ingredients. Apply oil in upwards motion to face.

Description: This oil hydrates skin and boosts collagen while reducing hyperpigmentation.

Fenugreek Hair Mask:

Ingredients: Fenugreek, Water, Grind

Directions: Add equal parts of fenugreek and water. Grind in a mixer until it becomes a paste. Apply to hair generously and wash off once it hardens.

Description: This mask is a great conditioner for your hair and leaves your hair feeling soft and silky.

Coconut Oil Hair Mask:

Ingredients: Coconut Oil

Directions: Apply coconut oil anywhere from 1-10 hours before washing your hair.

Description: This technique is one of my mom’s favorites and I always make sure to do it before my wash day. It always leaves my hair feeling great and stronger.
